MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The holiday season including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas is a time of celebration.  Families get together to celebrate, eat and enjoy the season.  For many people, the holiday season creates anxieties from memories of past events.  Financial difficulties cause stress on a family for fear they are not able to provide the “gifts” expected by their loved ones. I hope as we traverse through the festive season we remember to stop for a moment and reflect that we live in the greatest country in the world with freedoms experienced by no one else. Enjoy the holiday season and make someone’s Holiday season a joyful event.

Each year the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education conducts a formal evaluation of the district superintendent. I send an email to all staff members (more than 1,200) who respond anonymously to a five-question survey. They also have the opportunity to make comments.

Reading the responses always brings me back to the reality of the impact of the decisions a superintendent makes on the educational process of an organization, its employees and students. It is a great process that I take to heart and use the results to try to improve my ability as a leader each year. Some comments are difficult to read. But I’m glad they are anonymous, so people can be honest and open.  I love being a Hobbs Eagle and hope we, as a community, give our children the tools to be successful in life.

The completion of the first semester seems to occur faster each year.  We have begun the process of planning for 2018-19 school year.  The budgetary outlook for the state is certainly better than it was a year ago, when HMS returned $3.6 million to the state because of statewide revenue shortages. The HMS School board was able to give EVERY contracted employee a $500 one-time cost of living adjustment right before Christmas break. Hopefully this adjustment offset some of the anxiety caused by spending for Christmas presents as well as all the paperwork required to complete the end of a semester.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the Eagle Nation!  No matter your religious beliefs, please remember the reason for the season.  I hope you each have a blessed holiday and a very Happy New Year.  “Keep the Main Thing the main thing”.
