As a result of the recent vehicle accident near Andrews, our community is grieving the loss of six young adults and a rising educator. Please continue to support the students and staff of USW as they navigate the days ahead. Each of the individuals were a part of our community and we are a part of their lives. I appreciate the response of University of the Southwest in how they are handling this unthinkable loss. University of the Southwest will honor the students and staff member by recognizing the lives they lived and by telling fond stories about each victim. There is enough hurt being experienced to not add to that heap.
Hobbs High School is celebrating another State Champion!
Hobbs High Cheer brought home the Blue Trophy for the NM 5A Co-Ed Cheer championship. The dedication and commitment these student athletes and coaches displayed goes well beyond a single trip to The Pit. Our Cheer team begins their season in the middle of the summer each year. They spend countless hours supporting, celebrating and cheering for all of our HHS teams. In between those games, cheerleaders are refining their skills and routines to be able to compete in a number of competitions leading up to the state event. The team concluded their season  earlier this month as state champions. The student athletes of our cheer team will do great things in the future because of their commitment to a common goal and working together as a team.
In addition, Hobbs High School is celebrating our newest state champion wrestler. Ja’Nya Banks became the first female in the history of Hobbs High School to win a wrestling state championship title. Ja’Nya is also the first African American student HHS student to win a wrestling state championship. Ja’Nya also represents Hobbs High as a member of the soccer and track teams (when she’s not working at Albertson’s). Her tenacity to compete and desire to improve definitely paid off. While she earned a blue medal in wrestling, more importantly her involvement in multiple activities and academic success has provided an opportunity for Ja’Nya to play soccer at the college level while earning her nursing degree. Congratulations Ja’Nya. We are proud of you and excited to see what you will accomplish in the future.
Advice that comes to mind from the examples above, regardless of the difficulties each most certainly are facing or have faced, is from Yoda in Star Wars. To the Jedi masters, Yoda says, “Do or do not; there is no try.”
As we begin the month of April, I challenge you to shift the name of April to Ap-Will. What WILL you set out to accomplish and achieve?
