Nov. 2010 Column

As I drive to work each day, I am reminded of the treasures we are blessed with in Hobbs New Mexico. Although, we saw a downward trend in our economy, Hobbs has not suffered the extreme financial devastation the rest of the country is currently experiencing. The leaders of this community continue to have the forward vision that has attracted new businesses to our city and expanded employment opportunities.  As a result, Hobbs Municipal Schools has experienced student growth that has created a unique quandary. HMS has seen our student population increase by nearly 8 percent over the past four years, yet our funding has decreased by 5 percent in the last two years.  Rather than sit back and complain, the staff and administration has come to appreciate what we currently have.
We are thankful for;

·         The opportunity to work in an area that truly appreciates education.

·         A staff of teachers, nurses, custodians, social workers, secretaries and other support personnel who are committed to making a difference in the life of every student.

·         A community and school board who supports educating every child.

·         The financial support from 2 mill and 4 mill levies and a bond issue which enables us to provide quality facilities for our staff and students.

·         The technological infrastructure, hardware and software to offer accessibility to all

The list could become quite lengthy but the point is, we are fortunate to live and work in Hobbs, New Mexico.  The quality of life is second to none.  At times we may feel isolated from the rest of the state but there are times when that also can be a blessing.  Please enjoy the Thanksgiving break with family and friends and count your blessings for living in a wonderful part of the world. Blessings to all.
