Heizer band teacher and Southwest Symphony member Daniel Caballero describes how his trombone functions to Mills fourth-graders on Tuesday morning. Caballero and other symphony members provided an up-close look at instruments at every elementary school prior to a concert later in the morning at Tydings Auditorium.  Click on the picture above for highlights.

The Southwest Symphony performed for third and fourth-graders districtwide.  Prior to the performance, members of the symphony conducted a mini workshop at the city's elementary schools.

Youth Series

Hobbs music teacher John Duskey - who also is a member of Southwest Symphony  - plays the bugle, one of the original brass instruments, at Sanger Elementary School on Tuesday. Southwest Symphony members fanned out at all elementary schools to give a hands-on demonstration of instruments prior to performing a concert for fourth-graders at Tydings Auditorium later in the morning.

Southwest Symphony has brought Pearl Django to Lea County.  Pearl Django has performed at festivals, dances and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad.  They shared their talents with the Will Rogers Elementary students on Friday.

HHS senior Josh Ward demonstrates the French horn for Will Rogers students Tuesday morning. Ward was one of two HHS students - the other being Jeremiah Zamora - who performed with the Southwest Symphony for third and fourth-graders districtwide. Prior to the performance, members of the symphony conducted a mini-workshop at the city's elementary schools.

Southwest Symphony Tour of Schools and Southwest Symphony Concert

 

Michael Bradley, Jeremiah Zamora and Heather Etter - pictured here with Southwest Symphony conductor Mark Jelinek - this week  became the first high school students to perform with the symphony since its 1983 inception.

 

 

Musicians toured elementary schools prior to performing for third and fourth-graders on Tuesday.

Standing in the Shadows of the Master Musicians

The Discovery Violin Class had a performance after the intermission of the Southwest Symphony Concert as the master musicians and audience alike cheered them on.  That concert was on March 14th at the First United Methodist Church.


Tour of Schools
All the Southwest Symphony musicians went on a Tour of Schools in October where they modeled their individual instruments to the elementary students.

Fifth and sixth graders were entertained on Feb. 13 when the Southwest Symphony sponsored a performance by Red, Hot and Blue.
