Implementation in HMS

In 1999, each elementary school selected a Core Knowledge® team.  Each team consisted of two primary and two intermediate teachers and the principal.

In October, this team was invited to an orientation presented in Hobbs by the Core Knowledge® Foundation.  All team members were then invited to visit San Antonio and Lubbock schools using Core Knowledge® and to attend the 9th Annual Core Knowledge® National Conference in Anaheim, California, in March 2000. 

After these initial orientation opportunities, each team was charged with the responsibility of “sharing the knowledge” with staff members in their building. 

Each elementary school then devised a plan for Core Knowledge® implementation at their site.  Plans were submitted to district officials and all twelve elementary schools were selected to participate in a district-wide implementation. 

 A district plan was devised with the following timeline:

  • 1999-2000       Orientation
  • 2000-2001       Art and Music
  • 2001-2002       Language Arts and Math
  • 2002-2003       History and Geography
  • 2003-2004       Science

During this five year period, the Core Knowledge® Sequence was integrated with the New Mexico state standards. Teacher committees were organized to create this alignment and to provide other teachers with resource guides in each subject. Units were written and materials were ordered for each subject area to assist teachers in their instruction.

Currently 94% of the Core Knowledge® Sequence is implemented in our elementary schools.
