O'Brain Appointed to Vacant Board Seat

obrain being sworn inTerry O'Brain - shown here being sworn into office by District Judge Mark Sanchez at the July 18, 2017, board meeting - is the newest Hobbs School Board member.
O'Brain will serve out the unexpired term of Lance Wiseman, who resigned his board seat earlier this year when he moved from District III. O'Brain was one of three candidates the Hobbs School Board interviewed before voting him as Wiseman's successor. He is a corporate health and safety manager for Peak Completion Technologies Inc., has three children currently attending Hobbs schools and a son who graduated from Hobbs High School. His wife is employed as a paraprofessional at Coronado Elementary School.
“I just feel the school system has given so much to us — to my kids and family — and I’m in a place right now personally and professionally that I have an opportunity to give back,” O’Brain told The Hobbs News Sun during an interview announcing his candidacy. “I thought a good opportunity to do that would be serving with the (school) board.”
In that interview, O’Brain said he will focus on supporting teachers while bringing an outside perspective to budget building. “One thing that we need to concentrate on is to make sure we have the best teachers and make sure as a school system we’re supporting the teachers 100 percent and giving them everything they need to succeed,” he said. “Another thing that is a constant struggle for the schools is the budget and so I’d like to bring a perspective and an outside look at that."
