Welcome to Booker T. Washington

School history - Booker T. Washington was founded in 1929. It was created for only African American children. Miss Hazel "McMullen" Horton was the first and only teacher and served as Principal. BTW started with 30 students ranging from 1st grade through 8th grade. It was not until 1938 that Booker T. gained students up to 12th grade. During this time, the school had two more principals. Booker T. Washington was a segregated school, but by 1950, the enrollment was 350 students from Lovington, Tatum, and Eunice; all were bussed to the school. The last graduating class was in 1954 and consisted of just six students. As of today, Booker T. Washington houses students from all sides of diversity, with enrollment over 150 and steadily increasing. Booker T. Washington Elementary was named a spotlight school, ranking in the top 25% of all schools in New Mexico.
