During an all employee meeting on Aug. 20, HMS Supt. TJ Parks praised staff for a "phenomenal" job in the 2013-14 school year that boosted HMS to one of the most improved academic achieving districts in the state.

The volleyball team was on the verge of beating Odessa in its opening match of the season on Aug. 19 but fell 3-1 in close-scoring games.

Heizer Principal Rene Cantu and his coaching staff got the ALS ice bucket challenge wave started on HMS campuses when he called out the staff at Houston Middle School on Aug. 18. Many campuses responding in kind, dunking themselves while also donating to the charity.

More than 9,500 students arrived for school clean and shiny and in new clothes on the first day of class - Aug. 13.
